ADVENTURE TOURISM: There are many adventure experiences, from 4x4 trails, hiking trails and pony trekking to mountain biking, abseiling, bungee jumping, mountain climbing and even gold panning.

WHALE WATCHING: Hermanus, on the Cape south coast, is acknowledged as one of the best places in the world to see Southern Right whales. The cliffs offer incredible views of these peaceful animals as they come close to the shore to wallow, give birth and mate. You could also take a boat out to see them from almost anywhere on the southern coast. These enormous, charismatic animals weigh up to 60 tons each. They arrive on their annual journey from Antarctica in June, lingering until the end of November.

SHARK DIVING: This may sound terrifying, but it's not. There is an area near Gansbaai where you are almost guaranteed to see Great White Sharks. Those who are brave can be lowered into the sea in a shark cage, but it's just as entertaining to watch from the boat as these incredible creatures rise up and bite down on the bait supplied. You will leave with a whole new respect for these creatures, the lions of the sea.
